Safe Swapping

Safe & Secure Item SWAPU Guide (New Zealand)

Swapping items can be a great way to save money and give unwanted items a new life. To help keep everyone safe, please follow these guidelines.

Before You Agree to Swap

  • Exchange clear photos of the item from multiple angles.
  • Be honest about the item's condition, faults, and any missing parts.
  • Share accurate descriptions, including size, age, model, and functionality.
  • Agree on exactly what each person is swapping before meeting.
  • Keep all communication within the platform or in writing where possible.

Verify the Items

  • Ask for proof of ownership if appropriate (such as a receipt or warranty documentation).
  • Check serial numbers where applicable.
  • Avoid swapping items that appear altered, damaged beyond what was disclosed, or of suspicious origin.
  • If possible, test electronic items before completing the swap.

Choose a Safe Meeting Place

  • Meet during daylight hours whenever possible.
  • Select a busy public location with plenty of people around, such as: shopping centre car parks, cafés, community hubs, or police station public parking areas (where appropriate).
  • Avoid meeting at private homes unless both parties know and trust each other.
  • Tell a family member or friend where you're going and when you expect to return.

Bring Someone With You

If possible, bring a friend or family member. Having another person present can improve safety and provide another set of eyes when inspecting the items.

Inspect Before Swapping

Before handing over your item:

  • Carefully inspect the item you're receiving.
  • Test it if practical.
  • Confirm it matches the description and photos.
  • Do not feel pressured to rush the exchange.

If anything doesn't seem right, you can politely decline the swap.

Protect Your Privacy

  • Avoid sharing unnecessary personal information.
  • Do not provide copies of identification unless legally required.
  • Use a phone number or messaging service that you're comfortable sharing.

Stay Alert for Red Flags

Be cautious if someone:

  • Refuses to meet in a public place.
  • Pressures you to hurry.
  • Frequently changes the meeting location.
  • Provides inconsistent information.
  • Asks you to send your item before the swap without a trusted arrangement.
  • Wants to move communication away from the original platform immediately.

Trust Your Instincts

If something feels wrong, cancel the swap. Your safety is more important than completing the exchange.

After the Swap

  • Confirm both parties are satisfied before leaving.
  • Keep any messages or records of the agreement.
  • Leave Feedback on the SWAPU Platform.
  • Report suspicious behaviour to SWAPU.

Community Expectations

Everyone using this swapping community agrees to:

  • Be honest and respectful.
  • Describe items accurately.
  • Arrive on time.
  • Communicate clearly.
  • Treat others fairly.
  • Prioritise safety above completing a swap.

By following these guidelines, everyone can help create a safer, more trustworthy swapping community across New Zealand.
